Donald Trump positions himself as the voice of ‘the forgotten men and women’

Donald Trump painted a dire portrait of a lawless, terrorized nation as he accepted the Republican presidential nomination here Thursday night, delivering a sweeping indictment of a feckless political and corporate class that he argued was thrusting the United States into a perilous decline. Declaring that he alone has the leadership strength to secure the homeland and rejuvenate the economy, the billionaire real estate mogul offered himself as a “law and order” candidate and made a direct appeal to blue-collar Americans who have felt left behind in the 21st century.

Oscar Pistorius: Appeal over ‘shockingly lenient’ sentence

South African prosecutors say they will appeal against Oscar Pistorius’s six-year sentence for murder, calling it “shockingly too lenient”. The National Prosecuting Authority said the sentence was “disproportionate to the crime” and could bring the justice system “into disrepute”. The Olympic athlete was jailed earlier this month for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. He admits killing her but says he mistook her for an intruder. The 29-year-old was initially given a five-year term for manslaughter, but was found guilty of murder on appeal last December.

Roger Ailes out as Fox News Chairman

Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes has resigned from the company effective immediately, 21st Century Fox announced in a press release. Ailes’ resignation comes after former anchor Gretchen Carlson, a mainstay of the network for 11 years, left Fox News on June 23 and shortly afterward filed a lawsuit against her former boss. In it, she alleges that Ailes had “sabotaged” her career after she “refused his sexual advances,” and that her job was terminated in retaliation for rebuffing him and complaining to him about sexual harassment.

An airstrike in Syria killed entire families instead of ISIS fighters

The airstrikes at dawn on Tuesday pulverized entire families, including young children — families that were fleeing Islamic State militants but were instead mistaken for being those very fighters. Depending on whom you ask, the number of bodies found in the rubble is 56, 85, 160 or 212. Pictures of the mangled bodies, covered in dust, are a testament to the carnage. People who live near where the bombs fell — about 10 miles north of Manbij in northern Syria — said the only planes they’d seen since June were from a U.S.-led coalition battling the Islamic State.
