On Tuesday night during President Obama’s final State of the Union address, he encouraged Americans to not be overcome by fear, but to be optimistic about the future. “Each time, there have been those who told us to fear the future; who claimed we could slam the brakes on change, promising to restore past glory if we just got some group or idea that was threatening America under control,” Obama said. “And each time, we overcame those fears.”Republicans criticized Obama for downplaying terrorism.
2. Obama will halt new coal mining extractions
The White House announced on Friday that Obama will stop giving out new permits for coal extractions. The halt in coal mining will continue until the Interior Department reviews the permits and leasing. An administrative official discussed that halting permits will only reduce coal production after 20 years.
3. Insurgents attack Indonesia’s capital
Two civilians were killed in Jakarta, Indonesia on Thursday due to a terrorist attack. At least 20 civilians were wounded. Authorities sent army trucks to Jakarta on Friday to bolster security, and police claim this attack was carried out by the Islamic State.
