Week in Review–Feb. 5, 2016

Friday Roundup

This week in news: Cruz Wins Iowa; Bernie and Hillary virtual tie, UN alts peace talks with Syria, Presidential candidates drop out.

1. Cruz Wins Iowa; Bernie and Hillary virtual tie

Iowa’s Monday caucus went up like a storm; Cruz wins the state 27.6%, while Trump gets second place at 24.3% and Rubio not far from him at 23.1%. On the Democratic side, Hillary beats Bernie by just the slightest .3%. Hillary’s overall score turned out to be 49.9%. The next caucus is scheduled to be in New Hampshire this upcoming Tuesday, Feb. 9.

2. UN halts peace talks with Syria

United Nations ended the first peace talk in two years after war broke out as pro-government forces attacked rebels near Aleppo. UN official Staffan de Mistura called for international backing, particularly from U.S. and Russia, to cause the two sides to stop. The five-year war has been exacerbated in part because of foreign intervention and both the U.S. and Russia funding opposite sides of the war.  The Obama administration is hopeful that peace talks will start up again at the end of the month.

3. Presidential candidates drop out

Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, and Martin O’Malley have all dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucus. Paul only garnered 4.5% of the vote, Huckabee 1.8%, and Santorum 1%. On the Democratic side, Malley received .6%
