Plane carrying Pence skids off runway
A plane carrying Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence skidded off a runway Thursday night as it landed at LaGuardia Airport in New York.There were no reported injuries in the rough landing, which occurred on a rainy Thursday evening in the city. The press pool in the back of the aircraft, a Boeing 737-700 chartered from Eastern Airlines that was painted with the campaign’s logo, could feel the plane fishtailing as it touched down and sliding off the runway before coming to a very sharp halt in the grass off the side of the runway.

Dakota Access Pipeline: Police remove protesters; scores arrested
Police in riot gear faced off with protesters on horseback as the monthslong protests over the Dakota Access Pipeline came to a head Thursday. At least 117 protesters were arrested after law enforcement Humvees and helicopters began to flood the area to break up a protester encampment near the pipeline’s path. Calling themselves “water protectors,” supporters of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe set up tents and teepees on the land, about an hour south of Bismarck, which they said belongs to the tribe under a 19-century treaty.

As Iraqis close in on Mosul, the fight becomes more complicated
Thousands of civilians are escaping from ISIS as the extremists retreat from their villages surrounding Mosul. The offensive has killed hundreds of ISIS fighters, according to the U.S. coalition, with over 300 square miles clawed back by Iraqi and Kurdish forces to the east and south. There are 50,000 Iraqi ground forces, compared to the 5,000 ISIS fighters thought to be in Mosul.
Bundy Brothers Acquitted in Takeover of Oregon Wildlife Refuge
Armed antigovernment protesters led by Ammon and Ryan Bundy were acquitted Thursday of federal conspiracy and weapons charges stemming from the takeover of a federally owned wildlife sanctuary in Oregon last winter.The surprise acquittals of all seven defendants in Federal District Court was a blow to government prosecutors, who had argued that the Bundys and five of their followers used force and threats of violence to occupy the reserve. But the jury appeared swayed by the defendants’ contention that they were protesting government overreach and posed no threat to the public.
Biden Said to Be Considered for Secretary of State If Clinton Wins
Vice President Joe Biden is under consideration for secretary of State if Hillary Clinton wins the White House. Biden, a senator for 36 years who has served as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee before becoming vice president, has hammered Donald Trump over his cozy statements about Russian President Vladimir Putin. The White House calls Biden on its website “a leading architect of the U.S. strategic vision of a Europe whole, free and at peace.”
